Server Connection Guide

1.0 Install World of Warcraft

Feel free to skip this step if you already have World of Warcraft Installed, but we suggest you skim over it to verify you have the correct patch and setup.

If you do not currently have World of Warcraft installed, please choose the correct file below and download it (Left click, or right click "save as"). If you do have world of warcraft installed, you can skip to step 1.2.

After downloading the correct installer, you will need to run it. You will see a dialog come up, we highly recommend chosing "World of Warcraft: Wrath of the Lich King" to get the best experience on ExWoW (Refer to image 1.1.1 for an example). When the installer opens, you will need to click install and choose which language packs you wish to install. Next, you will need to scroll to the bottom of the agreement, and press "Agree". You will now be presented with a menu asking you to choose an "Installation Destination Directory". We highly suggest choosing "C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft" if at all possible (Refer to image 1.1.2 for an example). The install will now start... this process can take anywhere from 2 hours to 2 days depending on your connection speed.

Once you have successfully installed World of Warcraft, you are going to need to download the latest client patch. Currently ExWoW supports patch 3.3.x. First, we are going to check which client patch we currently have installed. This can be done by logging in and looking in the bottom left of the game client on the login window (Refer to grahic 1.2.1). If you already have patch 3.3.5, you're good to go! Skip to step 2.0 to change your realmlist. If you don't have that patch, you will need to go to this website.

Due to the nature of a patch, they need to be installed from the lowest version, to the highest. For example, if you have patch 3.1 and you need to get to 3.3.2... you will need to download 3 patches... 3.1 -> 3.2 -> 3.2.1 -> 3.2.2. Running a patch is quite straight forward, just make sure the patch file is inside your world of warcraft folder prior to running to avoid confusion. The easiest way to patch up to the patch we support (3.3.5) is just to run launcher.exe and let it patch you automatically.

2.0 Changing your realmlist

We'll be changing our realmlist here. If you already know how to do this, you can skip this step, and our reamlist is "login.exwow.com". Otherwise, we suggest you follow these directions. Changing the realmlist is very simple, but can be very difficult if you have no idea what you are doing.

The file we need to change to force the client to connect to ExWoW rather than retail wow is called realmlist.wtf. If you installed World of Warcraft in the default location, you can find your realmlist at "C:\Program Files\World of Warcraft\Data\(LOCALE)\Realmlist.wtf". (LOCALE) is the version of World of Warcraft you have, for example mine is EnUS (Refer to image 2.1.1).

To edit this file, you will need to right click, and click "Open With Notepad" (Refer to graphic 2.2.1). Your computer may not look like mine, but it's all about the same. (Note, you may need to click "choose default program", then choose notepad). Once inside realmlist.wtf, change the whole file to say "set realmlist login.exwow.com" (refer to graphic 2.2.2). Once you are done, you can choose "File, save".

Some users using Windows Vista users may need to save the realmlist.wtf to their desktop, and then drag it into the folder to overwrite the old one.

If you take Image 2.2.2 and go the other way, you'll be good for playing retail wow again! You can use one wow client for both retail and private servers. But, anyways your client is now setup to connect to the ExWoW realmlist and gameservers! In step 3, we'll make your account so you can get in-game! Your almost there...
